On 15 January 2026, CONCERTO partner Josep Peñuelas (Global Ecology Unit) delivered an invited lecture titled "The Biological Laws Governing Terrestrial Ecosystems and Their Limits as Carbon Sinks" during a scientific seminar hosted at the David Attenborough Building, University of Cambridge, with participation from Stanford University via Zoom.

The presentation explored the biological principles that regulate terrestrial ecosystems and the factors that determine their capacity to act as carbon sinks. Addressing questions that are central to understanding the global carbon cycle, the talk highlighted current scientific knowledge on the limits of terrestrial carbon sequestration and its implications for climate change research.

The invited seminar brought together members of the international research community, providing an opportunity to exchange ideas on ecosystem functioning, carbon cycle dynamics and the role of terrestrial ecosystems in climate mitigation. The topics presented closely align with CONCERTO's mission to improve the representation of the terrestrial carbon cycle through the integration of Earth observation, advanced modelling and data assimilation.
