CONCERTO participated in the 5th ECMWF–ESA Machine Learning Workshop, held in Bologna, Italy, from 13 to 17 April 2026, bringing together leading researchers and practitioners exploring the integration of machine learning and deep learning into Earth system observation and prediction.

During the workshop, the project was represented with the poster "Leveraging machine learning to exploit new land satellite observations for NWP and CO₂ monitoring", showcasing research that contributes to improving the use of satellite observations for numerical weather prediction (NWP) and carbon dioxide monitoring. The presented work aligns closely with CONCERTO's objective of advancing the representation of the terrestrial carbon cycle by combining Earth observation, machine learning and data assimilation to reduce uncertainties in Earth system models.

The workshop provided an international forum for discussing the latest developments in machine learning applications for Earth observation, weather forecasting and climate prediction. Participants explored how artificial intelligence can complement conventional modelling approaches, improve the interpretation of satellite observations and support the development of more accurate and reliable Earth system models.

By presenting its work at the event, CONCERTO contributed to ongoing discussions on the future of machine learning in Earth system science while increasing the visibility of the project's research within the international Earth observation and climate modelling communities. The workshop also offered valuable opportunities to exchange ideas with experts from academia, research organisations and industry, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing on emerging approaches to Earth system observation and prediction.
